Geographical Indications discussed in Beijing PDF Print E-mail

 

The EU-China Seminar on Registration and Protection of Agro-Product Geographical Indications was held in Beijing on September 19, 2011. This one day workshop, which was designed to meet the learning needs of Chinese beneficiaries, was co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture of China and the Delegation of European Union to China. GI products bring in over 14 billion Euros a year to rural economies in Europe, and the EU is working closely with China on the potential of mutual recognition of GIs.

Discussion focused on the delivery of EU’s regulatory structure and experiences. EUCTP II invited experts from governmern, lawyers and GI producers to present the full range of the regulations on GI at international,  EU and national levels, as well as best practices and case studies. The seminar also discussed the role of GI in promoting rural development. 135 Chinese participants from government, academia and business at central, provincial and local levels took part in the seminar.

Competition Experts meet in Beijing for EU China Competition Week PDF Print E-mail

Experts from the European Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the State Administration of Industry and Commmerce, gathered in Beijing to for EU China Competition week 2011.

Development of competition policy in China, and the implementation of the 2009 Anti-monopoly law, is an important part China's economic development. A strong competition regime is important in ensuring cheaper and higher quality goods and services for consumers. The EU works closely with the Chinese Anti-Monopoly Enforcement Agencies to help develop China's competition regime.

"Competition policy provides the rules that allow markets to operate" - Stanley Wong, EUCTP expert and former Director of Mergers and Monopolies, the Irish Competition Authority.

Launched in 2009, Competition Week is a twice yearly week of meetings and seminars that provide a forum for discussion and co-operation between the EU and China on competition prolicy. The week was opened by Mr Peng Sen, Vice-Chairman of the NDRC, and Deputy Director General Cecilio Madero Villarejo.

Chinese Agricultural Products protected in the EU PDF Print E-mail

Brussels - Four Chinese agricultural products have received protected status in Europe, it was announced on Friday. Guanxi Honey Pomelos, Shaanxi Apples and Longjing tea have been formally registered as Protected Denominations of Origin (PDO) and Liaxian Mashan yams as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This registration will protect these unique methods of production from imitation and promote the brands in the European market, as well as providing consumers with a guarantee of quality and food safety.

EUCTP II formally launched by Commissioner of Agriculture and Minister of Commerce PDF Print E-mail

The EU and China jointly celebrated the official launch of the EU China Trade Project (II) at the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing. Commissioner for Agriculture Cioloş completed his four day visit to China with the launch of the project. The Commissioner was leading a delegation of world leading European food and beverage brands to China to promote trade in foodstuffs and discuss bilateral agreements on Geographical Indications (GIs), a key bilateral trade issue supported in the area of agriculture.

Following bilateral discussions on the future of the GI negotiations, Commissioner Cioloş and Minister Chen unveiled a plaque commemorating the launch of the project, and discussed the mutual aims of the EU and China in developing trade.

The EUCTP is the 3rd major trade related technical assistance project since 2000, and is one of the largest EC bilateral assistance projects worldwide, and will continue to support China’s reform of its legislation and regulation in the field of trade, increase mutual understanding and promote the development of EU China trade.”, said Commissioner Cioloş

Minister Chen emphasised the importance of the EU-China trade relationship, ‘The EU has become China’s largest trading partner, largest market and an important source of FDI and technology transfer. China has become the EUs second largest trade partner. Despite the serious global financial crisis of the last two years, the EU-China trade partnership is still very strong, and plays an important role for both sides in shaking off the crisis.

 
EU and China share experience on currency and capital movement PDF Print E-mail

Two Chinese government delegations visited five European Union nations earlier in March to understand Europe’s experience with international currencies and free capital movements across borders. The visits follow Beijing’s recent moves to widen the use of its currency, the Renminbi, outside its borders, and its goal of gradually making the RMB convertible under the capital account.

Commissioner for Agriculture Cioloş launches EU China Agriculture Seminar PDF Print E-mail

Leading a delegation of world-famous European food and beverage brands, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Cioloş completed his visit to China by speaking about the importance of Geographical Indications for rural development and trade at the EU-China Seminar on Geographical Indications. The seminar, organised by the EU China Trade Project, included speakers from DG Agriculture, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture.
